With our proposal for the revitalisation of the morro da conceiçâo we are focusing our work on the connection between the morro and the port area. The area has a lot of unused potential due to its location and empty spaces. Between the main axes to this connection- Avenida Rio Branco to the east, Avenida Barao de Tefé to the west, the port to the north and Rua Sacadura Cabral to the south- we find an area defined by institutional/federal buildings, empty spaces such as parking lots and industrial storage halls. The southern area closer to the morro provides its residents‘ infrastructure. Small businesses reside here in run down houses under monu- mental protection. In order to revitalise the area we suggest to

- create points of interest at the port for example within the amazems to make the port more appealing – form more living space in the industrial areas of mixed use and social structure – densify the used and empty spaces, (the houses under monumental protection as well as the federal buildings and

the empty spaces) – conceptualise a middle axis of flux more suitable for the residents‘ needs and interests away from the main roads

which are mainly used to get to work and for traffic by using a language of urban design to appeal to pedestrians – shape public spaces for leisure and infrastructure (public green space, markets, and pedestrian areas)

The projects will be implemented in different steps, shaping different areas of urban use and to integrate into its environment. Our main point of interest in creating this new axis is to mix the different types of urban usage in order to create an equilibrate form of living. A gradation of residential usage will be recognisable from the morro to the port instead of a clear distinction as it is seen now.

We want to create ways and squares connecting through more living space and mixed uses and creating a convivential atmosphere also by its urban design.

Following the two most attractive extremeties of the topographic ligation Morro and Porto is a sequence of squares. The connecting way is made for the internal use of the neighbourhood and therefore suitable for pedrestrians and bikers. The connecting way is at the same time the north-south axis of this initiative project. It can be seen as the catalyst of the area’s further development. this connection through ways and open public squares is the morphologic symbol of our urban inter- vention proposal.

Studying the division of uses and functions between Morro and Porto we observe a distinct border. The Morro is a residen- tial island. In order to connect the two extremes the uses have to be mixed. We can achieve this by giving space to more residential use to the area in between the extremities.

Newly added buildings follow the internal concept of “compartmentalized mixture of uses” and are therefore multi-functional reservoirs. Working and living as well as cultural and infrastructural (social and functional) structures form a type of building which we will call Model M (Mistura).vereinen sich somit in einem Gebäudetypus, das im folgenden Modul M (Mistura) genannt werden soll. The theoretical and ideological base of this idea is the book “Zur Alltagstauglichkeit unserer Städte” (“About the capabilities of daily life routines in our cities”) by Andreas Feldkeller.

In order to create a strong atmosphere of conviviality there will be different clearly distictable and simple areas of atmos- pheres. This way we create relatable areas in a human scale to which people would relate and identify with their neighbour- hood. Clear distinct areas of atmospheres along the connecting axis simplify the legibility of the neighbourhood and lead to a strong connection between the extremes through a heterogene consistency.

The urban transformation is concentrated on three different elements. They serve the connection and derive from the concept.

The model M creates connction through uniform heterogenity. It is reservoir of living, working, social infrastructure and cultural spaces. The residential areas are on the upper floors while the first floor, directed to the street is dedcated to other functions. Furthermore is the ground floor a place for comunity actions and functions of convivential interest. The model M is a typological diagramm and is realized as a new construction, renovation or alteration.

The path creates connection through movement and flux. A uniform urban design engages the legibility of the connection and the whole neighbourhood. he is dedicated to neighbourhood-intern ways and serves mainly bikers and pedestrians. It is an otion to close the roads for cars on weekends. The three public squares create connection by being convivential points of interest to meet and communicate. They serve the community and are points of attraction also for people from outside of the community. They make the different areas of atmospheres legible. Every square represents one area of the neighbourhood. The squares are social areas of possibilities.

The area is place of many vast and empty spaces. For a mixed neighbourhood we are looking for more densificaton. We consider to relocate some of the federal institutions into the spaces of the polcia federal and use spaces within the institu- tions more efficient in order to be able to gain more space for residential usage.
