The river edge is not just a thin borderline between the water and urban mass. It is a wide area of transition which adds diversity to the homogenous built space. Therefore, the site and its character, a complementary part to the inner city, provide an environment for processes that can’t happen in the midtown. We can call it “a backyard” of midtown.
Another attribute of this transition area is the ability to connect its neighbouring partners. Neither of these potentials are fully utilized, due to presence of the infrastructure and carelessness.
We want to emphasize the character of the river edge as an entity which offers a different character in the environment and becomes a connection with its surroundings. We want to restore the former importance of Lilla Bommen as a gate to the harbour and as an underestimated endpoint of Östra Hamngatan, one of the most important streets in Gothenburg.
We articulate the riverspace as a sequence of different spaces, each with a unique character, therefore forming a broad field of opportunities. Different buildings divide those spaces, they connect them however with their ground floor.
